From the spreadsheet you keep to a ledger that works with you
Many people start tracking their spending in an Excel sheet and stop once it grows. Others tried an app before Masareefy and left months of purchases in it. Either way you do not start from zero: upload the file and your purchases move into your ledger with their dates, stores and items, and show up in reports and Insights as if you had logged them in the app.
On Account & privacy you will find both under Export & import data: Export Excel puts every purchase in one file, and Import Excel reads another file or a previous app's. An exported file imports as it is.

Importing, step by step
Choose the file
On Account & privacy tap Export & import data, then Import Excel, and pick an .xlsx file. If you do not have a tidy file, download the empty template and fill it in.
Tap Analyze file
The app finds the header row, even under a title, and matches each field to a column: date, store, item name, quantity and line total.
Check the matches and the preview
Change any column from its list and pick the date order if the file itself cannot tell; the preview follows every change.
Tap Import
Purchases are recorded in your account's currency, negative rows count as discounts, and the app shows a summary of what was imported, what was left out and why.

What importing does and does not do
The app reads .xlsx workbooks of up to 10,000 rows; a larger file is refused whole rather than partly imported without telling you. A category it does not recognise is recorded as Other, with a note of how many, so you can change them afterwards.
Importing never mixes currencies: amounts are recorded in your account's currency, and if the file names another currency you are told before importing. The file is kept on the server only while you import, then deleted.

Questions about importing from Excel
Which files can I import?
Excel .xlsx files of up to 10,000 rows: an export from Masareefy, a sheet you kept yourself, or a file exported from another app. A date and an amount for each purchase is enough.
What if my column names are different?
The app matches them by the usual names in Arabic and English and by what the columns hold, then shows you the matches; change any of them from its list before importing.
What happens if I upload the same file twice?
Its rows are not recorded twice.
Does it import income and refunds?
It imports purchases only; a row with a negative amount, such as a refund, is recorded as a discount on the purchase. A statement's credit column is not read.
Can I import a file in another currency?
Amounts are always recorded in your account's currency; if the file is in another one, the app tells you before importing.
Is Masareefy free?
Yes. Masareefy is free right now, with no payment card. Receipt scanning, voice logging and savings advice are for Premium accounts.
Don't start your ledger from zero
Bring your purchases over from the sheet you keep, then carry on from your phone by typing, by voice or with a receipt photo.
